iO donna
Corriere Della Sera, #43/2008

PRESS RELEASE
Rome, Saturday 25 October 2008. Today, for the first time, a contemporary work of art has become the cover of a women’s magazine. It’s The Wall, by the Italo-American artist, Gaialight, (www.gaialight.com) in Io donna, Corriere della Sera women’s magazine, on the newsstands all week.
The edition is dedicated to the young: icons, new frontiers, transgressions, bonds, desire to escape. Gaialight always uses irony to desecrate and denounce the critical themes of our times, choosing as supports the objects of mass consumption (tin cans, but also cigarette lighters, television sets and even aids for the disabled). With her language, somewhere between surrealistic black humor, post-pop and conceptual she contaminated, in this work, Valentino Rossi and Bush, Sex & the City and Berlusconi, A Clockwork Orange and Candy Candy, and then Totti, Osama Bin Laden, Superman, Marlon Brando and other stars of the mottled contemporary scene.
Already known to the public for her exhibitions in Rome, Paris, New York, Munich, the homages to the Film Festival in Rome (2007) and the Tribeca Film Festival in New York (2008), Gaialight also attracted the attention of critics for her three-dimensional collages where "traces of mass culture are stratified". Gaialight is also present in the eleven-volume work, Arte Contemporanea, Electa Mondadori.
The cover of Io donna transforms Gaialight’s work into an object of mass consumption thereby triggering a short circuit between art and mass communication, one of the the artist’s objectives.
In Gaialight’s future is a project of Art Actions and Resistance in Italy and abroad, about which the artist observes the strictest silence and a cycle of works in which she looks at today’s America with a new technique, while still being sophisticated and popular. In a word, "light".
COMUNICATO STAMPA
Roma. Sabato 25 ottobre 2008.
